Climate change and globalisation have transformed the Arctic. Today, efforts to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of future environmental, socio-cultural, economic and political factors in the Arctic are a high priority for national governments, international institutions and non-state actors. A Horizon 2020 project funded by the European Union, ArcticHubs develops solution-oriented tools, such as improved public participatory and geographical information systems, guidelines for a ‘social license to operate’, as well as future scenarios for Arctic communities, industrial stakeholders, policymakers and other relevant actors. This will assist in the creation and implementation of regional development strategies aimed at reconciling new economic opportunities with traditional livelihoods and solving land-use conflicts between different actors. These will also serve to increase the resilience of both new and existing industries and livelihoods against environmental, economic and political changes in the Arctic.
